The Body’s Energy Centers Explained: Where Science Meets Spirituality
What Are Energy Centers?
Maybe you’re more familiar with the term “Chakra”. There’s a lot of talk about chakras in the spiritual world; chakras - or energy centers as we refer to them at SoulPod - are not aolely a belief system — they’re an experience.
You’ve likely felt them without realizing it:
A lump in your throat when holding back words
A flutter in your chest during joy or heartbreak
A pit in your stomach when something feels off
These are more than emotions. They’re energetic signals — and ancient traditions around the world mapped them long before Western science began to catch on.
Systems like the Indian chakra model, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and even Indigenous Andean cosmology speak of subtle energy centers — areas in the body where physical, emotional, and spiritual currents converge. You can almost think of it like an intricate, multi tiered highway system. Where all the routes converge into one point - thats the energy center.
These centers are often described as swirling vortices or hubs of movement, but they’re also incredibly practical. They govern how we relate to stability, desire, self-worth, love, expression, perception, and connection to the greater whole. In fact, each is its own portal into healing, insight, and a deeper connection with the Field. They are maps of the inner world, encoded into the body.
How Energy Centers Relate to the Nervous System
While traditional science doesn’t always use the language of “energy,” it’s catching up in key ways:
Many energy centers correlate with:
Nerve plexuses — dense networks that distribute signals throughout the body
Endocrine glands — key hormonal centers that regulate mood, metabolism, and growth
Major organs and fascia — the connective tissue that stores tension, memory, and trauma
For example:
The heart center aligns with the cardiac plexus + thymus gland
The solar plexus aligns with the celiac plexus + digestive organs
The throat center connects to the vagus nerve and vocal structures
These physiological structures mirror what ancient systems described thousands of years ago. Today, somatic therapy and neuroscience affirm that our emotions live in the body — and that healing isn’t just cognitive. It’s somatic and energetic.
Each center acts like a tuning fork. When attuned, it radiates harmony throughout the system. When out of balance, it may manifest as anxiety, fatigue, lack of clarity, or even physical illness. That’s why addressing energy centers isn’t just spiritual — it’s deeply embodied self-care.
What Science Says About Subtle Energy
Western science is beginning to explore what many have intuitively known: the human body emits and responds to subtle energetic fields.
The Biofield
The NIH - National Institutes of Health - defines the biofield as a "massless field, not necessarily electromagnetic, that surrounds and permeates living bodies."
Research is emerging around how this field may regulate physiological and emotional states — and how practices like meditation, sound healing, and intention influence it.
Heart Coherence + Resonance
Studies from HeartMath show that the heart emits an electromagnetic field that shifts with emotional state and synchronizes with others' fields during connection or group meditation.
Frequency Medicine + Brainwaves
Modalities like binaural beats, vagus nerve stimulation, and neurofeedback are showing how energy and frequency modulate our brain, mood, and perception — essentially “tuning” our system.
These findings don’t prove energy centers exist in the way mystics describe — but they point toward a truth that bridges both experience and evidence. They remind us that we are not separate parts, but interconnected systems — woven together by sensation, emotion, vibration, and frequency.
Why Energy Centers Matter in Your Practice
When we become aware of our energy centers, we gain access to a new kind of intelligence: one that doesn’t come from thought, but from felt sense.
Benefits of tuning into your energy centers include:
Greater emotional awareness + regulation
Clearer boundaries + decision-making
Deepened intuition + spiritual connection
Relief from stored tension or blocked energy
Working with your energy centers over time reveals deeper truths — not just about how you feel, but about who you are becoming. You begin to notice patterns: where you collapse or overextend, where you hold stories, and where your energy naturally flows when you feel most alive.
Meditation and breathwork become more than just relaxation — they become tools for energetic attunement.
At SoulPod, our rituals are designed to work with these centers gently, intuitively, and without dogma. You don’t need to memorize colors or memorize Sanskrit names. All you need is a willingness to deeply feel.
Deep Dive: Understanding Each Energy Center
Before you begin the check-in, here’s a closer look at the seven core energy centers — what they govern, and how imbalance may show up. Remember, each of these centers are greatly nuanced. So although this provides a general understanding, the way an imbalance may show up in your unique system may differ. That’s where you’re own intuition comes into play.
The Root Center, located at the base of the spine, governs safety, stability, and a sense of belonging. When balanced, we feel grounded, secure, and connected to the earth. Imbalances in this center can manifest as fear, anxiety, or a persistent sense of lack. Physiologically, it corresponds with the pelvic floor, legs, and adrenal glands. A mantra we love for this energy center is simply: “I am safe”. Repeating that to yourself as you tune into your feet firmly planted on the Earth can be a simple, yet powerful, practice.
The Sacral Center, found in the lower belly, is the seat of creativity, emotional flow, and sensuality. When in harmony, it supports fluid self-expression and healthy intimacy. When blocked, you may feel creatively stifled, emotionally numb, or overly dependent on others. This center relates to the reproductive organs, lower back, and kidneys.
The Solar Plexus, located just above the navel, is your center of confidence and personal power. A balanced solar plexus supports self-trust, motivation, and clear boundaries. If out of alignment, it can show up as insecurity, control issues, or low self-worth. This center maps to the digestive system, pancreas, and liver. With this center - think about your most authentic self. Are you consistently coming back and choosing your most authentic Self? Or are you self abandoning?
The Heart Center, in the middle of the chest, governs love, compassion, and connection. When balanced, you experience deep empathy, openness, and forgiveness. Imbalances may bring grief, isolation, or overgiving. This energy center corresponds to the heart, lungs, and thymus gland. The heart is a powerful energy center as its the bridge between the lower triangle and the upper triangle; the bridge that connects our earthly experience and our spiritual being.
The Throat Center, located in the throat and neck area, is tied to communication and truth. When this center is in flow, your voice is strong, your words are honest, and your listening is deep. When it’s closed, you might struggle with expressing your needs or feel misunderstood. Physically, it relates to the thyroid, vocal cords, and jaw. Think authentic expression here. For many, this center requires some compassionate tending to: can you communicate from a place of openness, compassion, and highest truth?
The Third Eye, situated between the brows, is associated with inner vision, insight, and intuition. A balanced third eye brings clarity and perspective. When imbalanced, you may feel confused, mentally foggy, or disconnected from your intuition. This center connects with the pituitary gland and the brain. Think bird’s eye view at this center. Can you zoom out and see your journey…your path… in it’s entirety - without getting too bogged down by the minutia of every small circumstance or obstacle.
The Crown Center, at the top of the head, is linked to spiritual connection, purpose, and unity. When balanced, it offers a sense of peace and access to the divine. When blocked, it can feel like spiritual apathy, disconnection, or rigid beliefs. This energy center is aligned with the pineal gland and the central nervous system. Think downloads, profound insights, and your ability to know without needing a reason to know. This is the funnel through which information from the cosmos funnels into your human system. It’s a powerful and profound energy center.
Try This: A Guided Energy Center Check-In
Find a comfortable seat. Close your eyes. Take a slow breath in… and out.
Now gently bring your awareness to the following areas. You might even hover a hand slightly in front of each center as you rest your awareness there and notice which centers have more powerful energy (feel for an invisible force pushing into your palm):
Base of spine (stability)
Lower belly (emotions + creativity)
Solar plexus (confidence + self-trust)
Heart center (love + openness)
Throat (truth + expression)
Brow / third eye (insight)
Crown of head (connection)
As you move through each one, simply notice. Is there sensation? Warmth? Numbness? Nothing?
There’s no right answer. Just observation. Over time, this becomes a dialogue with your inner world.
You can even ask questions at each point:
What am I holding here?
What wants to be felt or seen?
What might bring more flow to this area?
Energy work isn’t about fixing. It’s about listening.
